Gro-Continental Join Growth in Eco-Friendly Heating

Gro-Continental Join Growth in Eco-Friendly HeatingShropshire businessman Mr Grocott, of Gro-Continental, recently joined the "heatwave" - along with many family members.

The heat pump for Mr Grocott's property was supplied by Nu-Heat Underfloor and Renewables, a company with expertise in the design and supply of ground source, air source and exhaust air heat pump systems as well as underfloor heating and solar thermal.

The installations carried out for the family who live in off gas properties comprised a ground source heat pump with underfloor for Ray's home, two air source heat pumps with underfloor and solar for David's home and a ground source heat pump with underfloor and solar for Linda's home.

Ray's home is a new-build, the last property to be built on the Prees housing development, one of the first developments to benefit from heat pump systems (and installed by Wilson Plumbing & Heating). Ray's property is quite unusual; he could only get planning permission for a bungalow, so most of the lower half of the house is built below ground. Wilson Plumbing & Heating worked with Nu-Heat to design a heating system based around a NIBE air source heat pump. The atypical set up of the house required a high / low temperature split as the ground floor needed to be cooler than the first floor, the opposite to usual!

Linda's home was set to be renovated, and she was clear that she wanted a sustainable heating system. A NIBE ground source heat pump was specified by Nu-Heat, as there was plenty of land for to lay the ground loops.

At David's home, a ground source heat pump had previously been installed by an electrical company, and was not working efficiently. The solution put forward by Nu-Heat comprised the linking of two Hitachi YUTAKI ASHP in series, one to feed the main house and the other to feed the remainder of the house and the annex. The integrated system included underfloor heating and solar thermal. There was no record of this linking having been achieved before, so Wilson Plumbing & Heating approached the installation with great care to ensure that the system would achieve optimum performance. Installation was carried out during the summer months so there was no disruption to heating requirements. The hot water changeover was completed within a day.

As this system was so unique, the handover was carried out over a number of days; the customer was present when the set-up was undertaken and was given comprehensive instructions on how to use and programme the system. After installation, Wilson Plumbing & Heating returned to the property on a few occasions to make final tweaks.

Our First NIBE 1330 Install - Church Farm Barns

Our First NIBE 1330 Install - Church Farm BarnsWe have just completed the installation of a 3 phase 22kw NIBE 1330 ground source heat pump. This system has 2000mt of ground collector and 800ltr of stored hot water in conjunstion with solar thermal panels.

The picture demonstates the extensive plant room installed for this project. The customer has allocated a specifc plant room area for all the materials required.

We have also installed underfloor heating for the ground and first floor along with the hot and cold pipework system.

Twin Stiebel Air Souce Install

Twin Stiebel Air Souce InstallThis farmhouse conversion was specified to have an installation of twin air source heat pumps due to the property size. Nu-Heat Underfloor and Renewables designed the heat pump and underfloor heating system.

We installed Stiebel Eltron WPL 18kw dual single phase air source heat pumps along with the associated hot water cyclinder and buffer tank assembly.

We installed 180m2 of underfloor heating pipework on the ground floor in liquid screed and 210m2 of the Nu-Heat Clippa-plate system for the first and second floors along with 4 manifolds.

Madeley Extra Care with Underfloor Heating

Nu-Heat has designed and supplied underfloor heating for 63 extra care apartments in a new development in Madeley, Staffordshire, developed by Housing 21. ‘The Madeley Centre' has been delivered by a small community charity led by a group of dedicated volunteers that provides a wide range of activities and services to local rural communities.

The overall development comprises the apartments, an eco-friendly community hub and a village centre. The apartments in Lea Court are available for rent or purchase and enable independent living with 24-hour on-site care if required. They each have two bedrooms, a walk-in shower room and a fitted kitchen.

The specification of underfloor heating in the three-storey, timber frame apartment building means that valuable wall space, where radiators would traditionally be fixed, is freed up giving the interior space more flexibility.

The installation utilized 18mm Knauf Brioboard laid over Nu-Heat’s 14mm Fastflo tubing in ClippaPlate aluminium diffuser plate. Knauf Brioboard is precision-engineered gypsum fibreboard that has advantages over traditional wet screeds, including high thermal transparency; this means that the underfloor heating reaches the required temperature quicker, resulting in a more efficient system. This floor construction meets Robust Detail requirements, removing the need for independent acoustic testing.

“The acoustic properties of this floor construction are maintained by the fact that the UFH components are suspended by the diffuser plates and used in conjunction with Knauf Brioboard – the only gypsum board to be used with UFH,” says Nu-Heat Commercial Manager Andrew Butt.”

“Knauf Brio is so much quicker to install than wet screed; with Brio on top it takes less time and less heat energy to get to the right temperature. This means we can provide a UFH solution which uses less energy and reduces CO2 emissions – attractive in both economic and environmental terms.”

Nu-Heat worked with the Thomas Vale Group, a leading provider of construction services and one of the largest privately owned construction companies in the Midlands. The underfloor heating installation was carried out by Nu-Heat Registered Installer, Wilson Plumbing & Heating.
Housing 21 has been in existence for nearly 50 years, and was originally part of the Royal British Legion. It is now a leading provider of housing, care and health options for older people. It is one of the five biggest providers of care services, managing more than 17,400 sheltered, extra care apartments and bungalows in over 400 schemes across 239 local authority areas.

Knauf Drywall manufactures a full range of plasters, plasterboards, insulating laminates, dry flooring, drywall accessories, and metal sections for domestic, commercial and public sector applications.
